The proof-sheets were never corrected by the author, who was in India at the time; as a result, it has been impossible to restore all the local and personal names to their proper forms.
A similar difficulty has arisen regarding quotations and cited authorities, all of which have undergone a double process of translation: first into Russian, then into English. The translator, who is also Russian and not perfectly fluent in English, cannot claim the deep learning necessary to verify and restore the many quotations to word-for-word accuracy. All that is hoped is that, through a careful translation, the correct meaning has been preserved.
The translator asks for the indulgence of English readers for any flaws in style and language; as the Sanskrit proverb says: "Who is to be blamed if success is not reached after an honest effort?"
The translator's best thanks go to Mr. John C. Staples for his valuable help with the early chapters.
