what reward will you have? Do not even the tax collectors Zöllner publicans or tax gatherers, often reviled in the biblical period for their perceived greed and cooperation with Rome do the same?

And if you are only friendly to your brothers, what special thing are you doing? Do not the tax collectors do likewise?

Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Take heed of your alms Allmosen charitable gifts for the poor, that you do not give them before people to be seen by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven.

Now when you give alms, you shall not sound a trumpet Posaunen to announce with horns before you, as the hypocrites Heuchler those who pretend to be virtuous to gain praise do in the synagogues original: "Schulen", here referring to places of assembly or religious schools and on the streets, so that they may be praised by the people. Truly I say to you, they have their reward already.

But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what the right is doing,
