Then, in the proper sequence, receptivity to the coarser parts of the Astralplan astral plane would appear, and later the finer parts would also be included, until finally, in time, the capacity for clairvoyance on the Mentalplane mental plane would have its turn.
In real life, however, such a regular development is hardly ever possible. Many a person has occasional glimpses of astral consciousness without their etheric vision having been awakened at all. This irregularity in development is one of the main reasons why man is so extraordinarily prone to errors in questions of clairvoyance, from which he can only free himself through a long course of careful practice under a teacher qualified for that purpose.
To the devoted readers of theosophischen Schriften Theosophical writings, it is well known that such teachers exist. Even in this materialistic century, the old saying holds: when the student is ready, the Meister Master appears; and: the disciple, when he is capable of entering the Hall of Learning, will always find his Master.
They also know well that one can only develop one's latent powers with safety under such guidance. They are aware how easily the untrained clairvoyant can be deceived about the meaning and value of what he sees, or even completely distort his vision when he brings it down into the physical consciousness.
It does not follow that even the student who receives regular instruction in the use of okkulter Kräfte occult powers will develop them exactly in the order described above. His previous development may not have been such as to make this path appear the easiest or most desirable for him. But he is at least under the direction of a truly capable guide for his spirituellen Entwicklung spiritual development, and he knows for certain that the path on which he is led is the best for him.
