not only one chapel built in Duke Street, Westminster Road, but another at Greenwich, and another at Twickenham, for the accommodation of those who believe in the Scriptures and their fulfillment. It was my firm belief in the Gospel that caused me to believe in the Spirit as a visitation from the Lord, according to our Saviour’s words. Obeying the Spirit and following his directions brought me into this situation and fulfilled the promises made to me in 1794. Thus, I have proved the truth of that Spirit, which Besley calls a "lying spirit" and a "mere useless devil."
However, his expressions are too blasphemous for me to repeat. Since I have known the Spirit by experience for more than forty years—far better than Besley knows anything about me—can anyone suppose that I would have published the Third Book of Wonders from a Spirit I could not depend upon? That book announces an event The birth of the "Shiloh" or promised child. which, if it does not take place, must destroy my entire establishment and leave me destitute of those numerous followers Besley says I have gained.
I appeal to the public for their judgment: do they think any woman would take such a risk as I have if I did not have sure grounds to rely on the Spirit that leads me? But Besley’s folly reminds me of a man's observation that there is every kind of sense in the world—good sense and nonsense—but common sense is scarce to be found. Common sense is certainly lacking in Besley. If he had common sense, reason would have told him that no woman would have taken the risks I have without having strong and certain grounds to rely upon the truths of the Spirit.
