Leadbeater, Charles Webster · [1908]

Handwritten note in the margin:
i.e., the Christian referring to the dogmatic teaching method
really?
why then the "Liberal Catholic Church" founded by C. W. Leadbeater with Masses and all Roman Catholic dogma?
...were of strict, metaphysical thinking. But the dogmatic teaching method is based on a story that is undoubtedly impossible, while speculation moves mainly in a materialistic direction. It strives to reach a satisfactory result by simply ignoring half of the phenomena with which we have to reckon. Neither dogmatism nor speculation approaches the problem from a practical point of view, as a matter that can be studied and researched like any other science.
The theosophical worldview a philosophy seeking direct knowledge of the divine rests on entirely different foundations. While it in no way disregards the science gained through the study of ancient writings or through philosophical thinking, it nevertheless regards the constitution and evolution of man as problems that are solved not by speculation, but by simple research. These are not indefinite theories, but definite facts. Its presentation is perfectly clear. The past, the present, and the future of man can be examined first hand by all those who will take the trouble to make themselves capable of this study. Thus examined, the
human life proves to be part of a wonderful, cohesive, and easily understandable world system. It indeed agrees with many of the ancient religious teachings and explains them, but it is in no way dependent on them, since it can be recognized as true step by step through the use of inner faculties. These faculties are still latent in the majority of people, but they are already beginning to stir in many of our students.
As far as the past history of man is concerned, the theosophical way of thinking does not appeal only to the common testimony of the tradition of earlier religions, but to the investigation of very specific records. These are records that can be seen and described by anyone who possesses that degree of clairvoyance the ability to see things beyond the range of ordinary physical vision required to perceive the vibrations of the super-fine matter in which these records are deposited. As for knowledge of the future of the human race, the theosophical worldview relies first on the logical conclusion that can be drawn from the progress already achieved. Secondly, it relies on direct communication from those people who have already reached the state that lies in the more or less distant future for most of us.
