Leadbeater, Charles Webster · [1908]

Sensation goes through a process that we are completely unaware of. For example, we touch an object that seems too hot to us and pull our hand back immediately, or so we believe. Yet science teaches us that this does not happen instantly at all. It is not the hand that feels the heat, but the brain. The nerves communicate the impression of heat to it. The brain then telegraphs the command to withdraw immediately through the nerve fibers of the hand. The withdrawal is only the result of this entire process, even though the action appears to us as immediate. With sufficiently sensitive instruments, the duration of these movements can even be measured. These are well known to physiologists. Thinking also appears to us as a momentary process, but it is not. Every thought must go through the path just described. Every impression that we receive in the brain through the senses must pass through these different types of matter before it can reach the true man, to the Ego the higher Self, to the inner soul.
We have here a kind of telegraph system between the physical plane and the soul. It is important to understand that this connection has several intermediate stations. Impressions can be received not only from the physical plane...
### Involution and Evolution. The diagram illustrates the hierarchical planes of existence and the progression of life. The vertical axis represents the range from Spirit at the top to Matter at the bottom.
