A short account of our firm, and of its long connection with Freemasonry a fraternal organization that uses the tools and language of stonemasonry as symbols for moral and ethical lessons, illustrating the Author's claim to write with some knowledge of his subject, may here not be out of place.
Mr. Samuel Spencer officiated as Grand Secretary the chief administrative officer of the Grand Lodge of England from 1757 to 1767. In 1800, Richard Spencer (Senior) had been for some years established in Great Ormond Street, opposite the former residence of the Lord Chancellor. His place was frequented by celebrities and wits of the day; and there he published various works which have come into my possession. In 1826, my father, his successor, removed to 27, Lamb's Conduit Street, in partnership with the late well-known Francis Crew, Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls. In 1832, the partnership was dissolved, and my father removed to 314, High Holborn. He had, prior to this, commenced to publish the long series of works from the pen of the erudite Dr. Oliver, some of which have run through many editions, and are even now in course of re-publication:
