As a partial remedy to this mighty evil, these Dissertations are recommended to the earnest attention of the English reader. I have already put him in possession of the sovereign cure by presenting him with the whole of Plato's works; and I have no doubt he will gratefully accept this lesser work as an appendage to that greater labor. He should consider it one more effort, among many others, of a man who, in order to benefit his countrymen of both the present and future generations, has hitherto abandoned all consideration of personal interest and sacrificed to the public good his health, strength, and ease, though these have always been considered among the things most dear and valuable in life.
