(and so highly esteemed, that the good turn which Sylla did the world in saving his works, was thought to recompense his many outrageous cruelties and tyranny,) so his name must never be mentioned among scholars but with reverence, for his unparalleled worth, and with gratitude for the large stock of knowledge he has enriched us with." What renders this encomium the more remarkable is that the author of it was at the same time attempting to introduce a philosophy of his own different from that of Aristotle.

Having chosen some large and empty house, and divided it after a certain manner into places, Gratarolus observes: "These places ought to be memorable and manageable signs; for places are not corners, but fixed images situated in corners: upon which, just as upon paper, other erasable images are painted, like letters. The fourth will be marked by a pestle by placing it there. The fifth by a notebook, etc. Let us pass to the images, which are the things to be placed; images well known to us must be placed in these spots with such motions, that we may be able to remember through them. For example, I wish to remember twenty names, I will do this: in the first place I will place an image of Peter, who is very well known to me, with a urinal in his hand full of urine which he pours..."
