"When you enter the gate, you see Shakyamuni." The Master said, "If you speak like that, how can you succeed?" The monk then asked, "What about the Master?" The Master said, "When you go out the door, whom do you meet? When you enter the gate, what do you see?" The monk had an insight at these words.
Monk Zifang asked Fayan, "Your father is Changqing, but you are a successor of Dizang. Why is this?" Fayan said, "It is because [Changqing] did not understand that 'Among the myriad appearances, the body stands out alone.'" Zifang raised a fly-whisk to show him. Fayan said, "Are you separating from the myriad appearances, or not separating from the myriad appearances?" Zifang said, "I am not separating from the myriad appearances." Fayan said, "The solitary body chants." Zifang again said, "I am separating from the myriad appearances." Fayan said, "In the midst of the myriad appearances." Zifang thereupon understood the ultimate meaning and sighed, saying, "I have wasted my life."
Mountain Master Xiu was talking with Fayan. Fayan asked, "The ancients said, 'Among the myriad appearances, the body stands out alone.' Is this separating from the myriad appearances, or not separating from them?" The Mountain Master said, "It is not separating from them." Fayan said, "Why speak of separating or not separating?" The Mountain Master was confused and returned to Dizang.
Dizang asked, "You have not been gone long; why have you returned?" The Mountain Master said, "I have a matter that is not resolved; how could I dread the hardship of traveling over mountains and rivers?" Dizang said, "Your crossing so many mountains and rivers is not bad." The Mountain Master did not understand his intent and asked, "The ancients said, 'Among the myriad appearances, the body stands out alone.' What is the meaning of this?" Dizang said, "You tell me: did the ancients separate from the myriad appearances, or not?" The Mountain Master said, "They did not." Dizang said, "Two of them!" The Mountain Master was shocked and pondered deeply, then asked, "I do not know if the ancients separated from the myriad appearances or not." Dizang said, "What do you call the myriad appearances?" The Mountain Master was suddenly and greatly enlightened. He bowed and took leave of Dizang. [He then] observed Fayan, and Fayan's words and meaning were exactly the same as Dizang's revelation.
○ Chan Master Juxun came from Lingnan. Yantou asked, "The merit of Lingnan—has it been achieved yet?" Xun said, "It has been achieved for a long time; it only lacks the eye-dotting meaning: the final touch to bring it to life." Tou said,
