"There is not a single dharma that can occupy the mind."
Master Mihu of Jingzhao visited Chamberlain Wang. While the Chamberlain was attending to affairs, he held up a brush and looked at it. The Master said, "Can you judge emptiness?" The Chamberlain then threw down the brush and went into his residence, and [the Master] could not see him again. The Master was suspicious. The next day, he relied on a Huayan monk to set up a tea banquet and asked, "Why was Chamberlain Wang unable to see me yesterday because of what Master Mihu said?" The Chamberlain said, "The lion bites people; the Korean dog chases a clod of earth." As soon as the Master heard this, he burst out laughing and said, "I understand! I understand!" The Chamberlain said, "You understand, that is not wrong. Try to explain it." The Master said, "I invite the Chamberlain to raise it." The Chamberlain then held up a chopstick. The Master said, "You old wild fox spirit." The Chamberlain said, "This fellow has penetrated it."
Master Mihu ordered a monk to ask Yangshan, "Do the people of today still need to seek enlightenment?" Yangshan said, "Enlightenment is not lacking, but why have you fallen into the second stage?" Yangshan deeply affirmed this.
Jingshan, because Emperor Daizong summoned him to the palace, paid him personal homage. One day, while the Master was inside, he saw the Emperor get up. The Emperor said, "Master, why are you standing?" The Master said, "How can the benefactor see the poor monk among the four dignities?" The Emperor was very pleased.
Chan Master Deshan Xuanjian first arrived at Longtan. He asked, "I have long wished to visit Longtan, but since arriving, I see neither the pool (longtan) nor the dragon." Longtan said, "You have personally arrived at the Dragon Pool." The Master bowed and retreated.
Later, he entered the room at Longtan. It was deep in the night. Longtan said, "You should go down now." The Master said, "Take care," lifted the curtain, and went out. Seeing that it was dark outside, he turned back and said, "It is dark outside." Longtan lit a paper candle and handed it to him. Just as the Master took it, Longtan blew it out. The Master suddenly lost his voice and said, "From now on, I will no longer doubt the tongues of all the old monks in the world." He then took his commentaries, went in front of the Dharma hall, and holding up a torch, said:
"Exhausting all profound arguments, it is like placing a single hair in the great void. Exhausting the pivots of the world, it is like casting a single drop into a great abyss."
He then burned the commentaries.
