The commentator explains the epithets of Bhairava: "God of gods" (Devadeva) because He illuminates all deities from Brahma to those ending in the lowliest; "Adorned with the trident" (Trishulanka) as the essence of the triad of will, knowledge, and action manifested by the power of freedom; "Wearing the skull as an ornament" (Kapalakritabhushana) because He encompasses the entire universe of names and forms, revealing the freedom of consciousness. "Beyond direction, space, and time" refers back to the previously defined nature of the Supreme Shakti. The query regarding the "means" (upaya) is in the plural because these include different types such as the gross, subtle, and supreme (anava, shakta, and shambhava) practices related to the breath, body, and intellect. "His face" (mukham) refers to the gate to the state of Shiva. The Goddess asks how she might properly understand this, effectively requesting that He reveal it to her.
Hereafter follows the commentary by Shri Shivopadhyaya.
To determine the subject of the questions, the Lord Bhairava reveals the knowledge of the foundation in sequence:
Shri Bhairava said:
The upward breath, and the downward life-force,
As the nature of the emission, the Supreme shall rise.
At the place of the two-fold origin,
Through filling, there is the filled state. 24
