It has long been a desired work in the field of botany to have all the species of fungi known to date, though described in various books, collected in a single volume. For this reason, I trust that I have undertaken a task that is not unwelcome.

Even if various European regions, to say nothing of foreign lands, have not yet been investigated or hardly so, as far as mycological science is concerned, nevertheless there is already a great multitude of these vegetables that have been discovered in France, or in England, or in Germany;
