The central shield is divided into four quadrants containing a flower, a book, a plant, and a gear. The emblem is surrounded by the text "THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN 1891" and the motto "PRO SCIENTIA POPULIQUE SALUTE" For the sake of knowledge and the health of the people.
