Uredo and Puccinia, Melanconium and Stilbospora are affine; but Uredo and Melanconium, Phragmidium and Puccinia are analogous. Sphaeria and Hysterium are affine, but Sphaeria and Verrucaria are analogous. Clavaria and Peziza, Biatora (e.g., Lec. icmadophila Ach.) and Baeomyces are affine; Clavaria and Baeomyces, Peziza and Biatorae are analogous, and so on to infinity.
The Linnaean comparison of the affinity of plants to a geographical map seemed not ignoble; let it be forgiven, therefore, if I extend it so that affinity in it indicates longitude and analogy indicates latitude.
Nor does this square only with the lower classes. The laws of nature are everywhere harmonious. Thus, Labiatae and Personatae, Asperifoliae and Solanaceae are analogous; Labiatae and Asperifoliae, Solanaceae and Personatae are affine. Compelled to seek the utmost brevity, already exceeding the limits prescribed for me, I will only add If the Mycological System and the principles on which it relies do not displease everyone, I will endeavor to demonstrate the disposition of the entire vegetable kingdom.
