HYMENOMYCETES.
HISTOR. The order, as I have now circumscribed it, is quite natural. The ancients joined all analogous genera of different orders with its genera; Persoon includes the Tremellas, Stilba, etc. More recent authors exclude not only these, which constitute their own orders, but also the Mitrati. Regarding the species, one should consult especially Micheli, Bulliard, Sowerby, Holmskôld, Albertini & Schweiniz, as well as Persoon, who is to be praised everywhere. Micheli first rightly noted the position of the hymenium and the sporidia, which in many species jump out elastically, and Hedwig first rightly noted the asci. Genera devoid of asci, with sporidia separating from an indistinct hymenium like dust, are highly heteroclite deviating from the common rule!
DIVIS. Based on the nature of the receptacle, I shall divide them into two series, which I shall consider as suborders and present separately as is customary:
Subordo I. MITRATI. Receptacle pileiform, bullate, never closed. Hymenium immarginate, not discoid.
Subordo II. CUPULATI. Receptacle cup-shaped, uniform. Hymenium discoid (when young, sub-closed), surrounded by the margin of the receptacle.
CRITICA. That these two suborders should never be separated from each other will be demonstrated below by many examples. I have adopted the method of arranging them by the receptacle, as it is convenient in habit, but in the future, these are secondary and primary ones must be taken from the nature of the hymenium, for example: I) Hymenium persistent, asci fixed = Morchella, Helvella, Peziza, Stictis, etc. II) Hymenium persistent, asci erupting = Vibrissea, Ascobolus, Burcardia. III) Hymenium deliquescent = Ditiola, Xylographa. IV) Hymenium crumbling into dust = Tympanis, Propolis, etc. That is to say, those genera which are now considered related would then become analogous, and vice versa. Meanwhile, the still hidden fructification of various types forbids following this.
