The celebrated CLUSIUS already noted the main varieties very well:
α. rotunda round, with round pileus and areolae. Pers. l. c.

Color whitish-pale, when dry straw-colored or yellowish, etc. It is rarer among us, but this alone is in North America. Schweiniz.
β. vulgaris common, with oval pileus, areolae somewhat quadrangular. Pers. l. c. β.

Color mostly livid-sooty, soon brown or sooty, when dry brownish. In the mountains of Europe, in Siberia as far as Kamchatka. Wormskiold.
γ. fulva tawny, with oblong (rhomboid) areolae.

Color tawny, tawny-brown. This has not yet been gathered among us, frequent in southern Europe and in the Orient. (v. s. original: "vidi siccam" — seen dried)
δ. conica conical, with conical pileus, elongated (rhomboid) areolae.

Color brown, chestnut, blackish (Vaill. par. p. 21.) Micheli never found it in Italy; among us it is most frequent.
