CHAR. Stipe firm, thickened toward the base. Pileus cap waxy-membranous, inflated, lobed, at first adnate attached to the stipe and smooth; later becoming free. Large, edible: (I could not name any species H. mitra, lest I nourish the ancient controversies by which this name is burdened).

Solitary, large, 3–5 inches high, glabrous smooth at first glance. Stipe snow-white, becoming yellowish upon drying, robust, ventricose swollen at the base, entirely sulcate-costate grooved and ribbed and lacunose, with flat, hollow ribs; thus, when the stipe is dissected, it is composed of several discrete tubes. Pileus deflexed, inflated, lobed, the margin at first adnate to the stipe, later free, undulate, crisp, pale, white or yellowish, smooth underneath.
