Original fileErotic sculptures, Konark 13
This high-relief sculpture, carved from weathered brownish sandstone, features a couple in an explicit sexual embrace. The male figure stands supporting the female, whose legs are tightly clasped around his waist while their torsos are locked in a close, upright intimacy. To their side, another fragmented figure is visible in a lower, seated or crouching position. The background consists of a grid-like, perforated geometric pattern characteristic of the architectural ornamentation found at the Konark Sun Temple.
The depiction of mithuna, or auspicious amorous couples, is a staple of Kalinga architecture, symbolizing fertility, the union of opposites, and the integration of worldly desire (kama) within the sacred space. Such carvings are often interpreted as tantric expressions of non-duality or as protective guardians of the temple structure.
Kamasutra
The sculpture reflects the classical Indian tradition of documenting various sexual postures and physical intimacy as a fundamental aspect of human life.
