Original fileIdols, Khajuraho - Western Group of Temples
This stone relief depicts a central group of four figures entwined in a group sexual act. A central male figure, seated, is flanked by two women who embrace him while engaging with a fourth figure positioned below, who is inverted with her head down and legs raised. The figures are adorned with traditional Indian jewelry, including necklaces, armbands, and waist ornaments, and are rendered in the high-relief style characteristic of the Chandela dynasty. Two flanking figures stand in frontal poses on either side, observing or participating in the atmosphere of the scene.
The Khajuraho temples, built by the Chandela dynasty, are renowned for their erotic sculptures (mithuna) that represent the synthesis of religious architecture and the celebration of life, often associated with Tantric practices and the pursuit of kama (desire) as a legitimate aim of human life.
Kamasutra
