Original fileBirth of Muhammad from the Jami‘ al-tawarikh (big)
This miniature depicts a domestic interior scene divided by architectural columns. In the center, a large angel with outspread wings holds the swaddled infant Muhammad, while a second angel hovers nearby holding a censer. To the right, Aminah reclines on a bed covered in a patterned textile, attended by women. On the far right, a bearded man, likely the Prophet's grandfather Abd al-Muttalib, sits holding a staff. To the left, three standing women and an elderly figure with a cane observe the scene. The figures wear traditional medieval Persian attire, including elaborate robes, headscarves, and turbans.
This illustration originates from Rashid al-Din Hamadani's 'Jami‘ al-tawarikh' (Compendium of Chronicles), one of the most important historical texts of the Ilkhanate period, which aimed to document the history of the world including the life of the Prophet.
