Original fileIran, forse shiraz, giv in conversazione con kay kavus, 1560-70 ca
This Persian miniature painting depicts an ornate interior scene set within a palace, with the enthroned King Kay Kavus situated on the left and the hero Giv seated before him on a smaller, elaborate chair. The composition is filled with numerous figures wearing traditional turbans and patterned robes in vibrant blues, oranges, and reds. Above the main audience hall, a balcony contains additional figures, while a group of men and a horse are visible in the lower right foreground. The walls are decorated with intricate blue tile patterns and floral motifs, and the scene is framed by panels of Persian calligraphy.
This scene is an illustration from the 'Shahnameh' (Book of Kings) by the poet Ferdowsi, the Persian national epic which details the mythic and historical past of the Persian Empire.
Multiple blocks of Nasta'liq script are integrated into the composition, appearing in the upper register and the lower margin of the central panel, as well as the decorative border frame.
Translation
