...that they may be seen by men;
and they have received their reward. But you,
when you perform charity original: "zedqta," which can mean righteousness, justice, or alms.,
do not let your left hand know what
your right hand does, so that
your charity may be in secret. And your Father,
who sees in secret, He will repay you
openly. And when you pray,
you shall not be as the hypocrites original: "nasbay b-appe," literally "those who take on faces" or "mask-wearers," a common Semitic idiom for actors or hypocrites.,
who love to stand
in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets
to pray, that they may be seen by men.
And truly I say to you,
they have received their reward. But you,
when you pray, enter
into your inner chamber and shut your door,
and pray to your Father who is in secret;
and your Father, who sees in secret,
will repay you openly.
And when you are praying,
do not be babbling like the
heathens; for they think that through
much speaking they are heard. Do not,
therefore, be like them;
for your Father knows
what you require, even before
you ask Him. Thus, therefore,
pray: Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.
Your will be done, as in heaven,
so also on earth. Give us the bread
of our necessity today. The phrase "bread of our necessity" corresponds to the "daily bread" found in most English translations. And forgive
us our debts, as also
we have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil [one].
For Yours is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever
and ever. Amen.
For if you forgive men
their offenses, your Father who is in heaven
will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive
men, neither will your Father
forgive you your offenses.
And when you are fasting,
do not be gloomy like the
hypocrites; for they disfigure
their faces so that they may be seen
by men to be fasting. And truly
I say to you, they have received
their reward. But you, when
you are fasting, wash your face
and anoint your head, so that you
may not be seen by men to be fasting,
but by your Father who is in secret;
and your Father, who sees in secret,
He will repay you.
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures?
on earth, where moth and rust?
destroy, and where thieves?
break in and steal. But lay up?
for yourselves treasures in heaven,?
where neither moth nor rust
destroy, and where thieves do not break in
and steal. For where
your treasure is, there also is
your heart.
A small, circular decorative knot or interlaced line-art emblem is centered at the bottom of the second column. These symbols often marked the end of a pericope or section in early manuscripts.
