This library is built in the open.
If you spot an error, have a suggestion, or just want to say hello — we’d love to hear from you.

I would like to acknowledge that it is not my work to write Books; I request, therefore, that the errors which may be found in this Book may be interpreted for the best. It was not my intention to bring the same to light, and I felt no desire whatsoever to want to become a Writer: But since some of my Friends, who are Men of Science and capable of judging what Observations may be useful in the practice of Medicine for the common good, have assured me that these my Observations could be serviceable for those who wish to busy themselves with the delivery of Women, I have therefore decided to bring the same to light in good faith and to share them with my neighbor. I shall not regret having been brought to these thoughts if they are judged impartially. One should not look so much at the style, nor at the arrangement of the words (for which I readily acknowledge that I do not have enough literary training), as rather at the subject matter itself, which I have primarily attended to, being able to say that I have written nothing concerning the same but what I have truly done, and am still able to do, when the occasion presents itself. When I have pointed out the errors of some Midwives, this was not done with the intent to offend them, nor to stand in their way; I have also for that reason avoided naming them; but it has occurred solely for the Instruction of others, so that they might not fall into the same errors; and he who has understood my intent well will find that it is without any desire for gain. Furthermore, I request that the Reader hold me in good stead for not having grouped those Observations that deal with almost similar matters together. They are arranged according to the time in which they were made, besides that they still always have some difference in these or those particular circumstances.
You who shine in deeds and writings, bear the omen of your name.
You celebrate the breeze of a safe harbor, or the gate of salvation.
Such you are called by the Gods above, your deeds celebrate you,
Your writings sing of you. What more can I? All things yield to you.
