of fresh water here that springs up on the mountain and runs past the city, or village.
Plundering of that region.
Battel, wounded, is brought to St. Paulo.
When we had been here for 5 days, we traveled further inland, where we plundered and burned for 6 weeks, and after that time returned again to Ingombe with a multitude of slaves, sheep, and goats, and very many pearl-stones, which pass for good money there. Expedition to Bahia de Vaccas Bay of Cows,
And trade there.
Later, the Governor sent a frigate with 60 soldiers, of which I was one, well-provided with everything, to the South Coast; we arrived there at the latitude of 12 degrees and found a fine sandy bay: the inhabitants of the place brought us cows, sheep, wheat, and beans, but we did not stay there and subsequently came to the Bahia de Vaccas, or Bay of Cows, called by the Portuguese Bahia de Torre, or Tower Bay, because there is a cliff like a tower. Here we arrived on the North side of the cliff, anchored in a sandy bay, and bought many cows and sheep, which were larger than our English ones, and very fine copper; we also bought here a kind of sweet wood called Cacongo, much valued by the Portuguese, as well as much wheat and beans. As soon as we had loaded our bark, we sent it home, but 50 of our men remained on land and threw up a small fort that we enclosed with palisades, as the people of this coast are treacherous and not to be trusted. In the time of 17 days, we had bought 500 head of cattle, and after 10 days, the Governor sent 3 ships there, with which we returned to the city.
In this bay, the ships come to lie without danger
