wilderness than a city; for one encounters neither wall nor house, but instead sees nothing but hills overgrown with wild hedges and shrubs. The Turks have taken the stones from there for the building and repair of their decayed castles, so that nothing remains but a few cellars in which some poor Armenians still live, who earn their living with the Lucks-vangst lynx trapping, these being beautiful spotted animals, the size of a dog, and famous for their beautiful fur. These animals are caught in this way: they dig a deep pit in the earth, put a hungry lamb in it, and cover this pit with thin tree branches and green foliage. The lamb bleating from hunger, the animal comes rushing toward this pit, falls into it, and is either beaten to death inside or taken out alive with a snare.
A certain castle inhabited by Greek Christians.
We continued our journey and sailed along a very high mountain upon which a large castle was built. This castle is inhabited by Greek Christians who travel here from Greece to practice their studies and spend their lives in great peace, provided they pay their tribute to the Great Turk.
The Island Lemnos.
The next day we sailed along the famous island of Lemnos and remained still by a beautiful large village. The Bassa Pasha or highest commander of this island came to greet our Bassa on his ship and presented him with all kinds of fruit, such as melons, lemons, and citrons. We also provided ourselves with sweet water and other necessities, and the Bassa of this island, having taken his leave of our Bassa, was set back on land toward evening amid the firing of our cannon.
Stalimene.
The island of Lemnos is nowadays called Stalimene and is very famous because of the Sealed Earth, or Terra Sigillata medicinal clay, which is very well known to physicians and found here in abundance.
