1606.
Between Troja and the island of Lemnos, one encounters very many dangerous cliffs in the sea, such that one is compelled to place a lookout every night on the long iron point that is in front of the galley. The lookout has a lantern tied to a long pole to look ahead, to discover the cliffs, and to warn the helmsman of danger.
Lesbos, the island.
After two days of sailing, we arrived at Lesbos, an island which is nowadays called Metelino. Here we stayed still for three days and provided our fleet with all kinds of fruit, wine, and water.
The islands Chio, Icaria, Samo, Coo.
Hereupon we sailed on while the wind was good and passed the islands of Chio Chios, Icaria, and Samo Samos. But at the island of Coo, called Stancora by the Turks, we dropped our anchors. Here we poor slaves, after such laborious work and heavy toil, had a little rest, and some fruit was handed to each of us for refreshment.
After having rested for two days, we continued our journey toward Rhodis Rhodes and passed the region of Doris, which stretches far into the sea. We also came into sight of the formerly very famous city of Gindus Knidos.
The city Gindus.
This city is nowadays very decayed and does not even have the slightest signs left of its old splendor. The Turks call it Capochio and pay no more attention to it. Sailing past Gindus on the left and the famous island of Creta Crete on the right, we arrived after three days of sailing with the entire fleet at Rhodis. We would have reached this island much sooner, but the contrary and stormy winds tossed us here and there, so that we had great difficulty keeping to our left.
The famous island Rhodis described.
Rhodis, a very precious and famous island, is located about 20,000 paces from Asia Minor, directly opposite the region of Caria, which is a part of the Kingdom of Lycia. This island is commonly calculated to have a circumference of thirty High-German miles.
