we could sound it. Being no two miles from land, we found no bottom at 60 vadem fathoms.
Cape St. Augustine.
On the 18th, we were at the latitude of 23 degrees, 37 minutes, for which reason we steered towards it, determining that this was the place we were looking for. But approaching closer, our Sloepen shallops/boats, sent out in advance, found only 6 vadem of water, so that we dropped our anchor around one o'clock in the afternoon in seven and a half vadem, sandy bottom, having the two islands and the shallows one mile from us to the South-West. About three miles from us to the North-East was an Inham inlet/cove, which the skipper determined to be St. Augustine, which we intended to enter, though, according to the ship's council held, not to tarry there long. The variation or deviation here is 15 degrees, 30 minutes, and having observed it again in the morning, it was 15 degrees, 26 minutes; however, I had to make the observation about the land about half a degree high; otherwise, that variation would have been quite a bit larger. I am now certain of those two observations. The flood tide went Eastward here.
Bad anchors. One broke.
On the 19th, we weighed our anchors, and while winding them up, one broke because there was a flaw in it. To tell the truth, there is quite a bit to be said about that; however, I will include the details of what is lacking in my statement regarding this.
We then steered towards the above-mentioned (as we thought) harbor or bay, and from where we had weighed our anchor, we found 10, 12 to 20 vadem of water. And not far from the Point, coming to the height of the Bay, we had no bottom at 100 vadem until we were quite far into the bay (our shallops being in front, they found bottom). Here we had from 30 to 8 vadem, and deeper water further inward. We anchored here in 18 vadem and dropped a second anchor in 40 vadem. The South bank had the deepest water, but on the other side, it was shallow due to the inflow of the rivers.
