to the South. This bank lies dangerously, in order to pass by it at night unless one has knowledge of it. It also seemed not unlikely to us that there is also a passage between the two Northern islands, but that is not a mile wide. The Southernmost island is the largest.
Arrive at Priaman. Description of the coast.
On the 26th of the same, we were halfway between Priaman and Tecu, about three miles from the land, where I noted that the two hummocks of Tecu with the high land behind them lie Northwest and Southeast by East. There also lies a bank four miles from the land, which is extended toward the South and North, just like the high land of Tecu. We had two and a half miles from the land 45 fathoms of water, and were Northeast by East from the roadstead of Priaman. About 4 miles from there lies an island that extends itself Northeast and Southwest. The three islands of Priaman lie South-southeast and North-northwest, each about a mile from the other. In the afternoon, we arrived at the roadstead of Priaman, and greeted the city with five cannon shots.
Gifts from and to the Governor.
The Governor sent me a goat, and I presented him with three pieces of stammet a type of fine wool cloth, usually red, a blue calico, a piece of stokjens-grond a specific patterned fabric or ground cloth, a small cask of wine, and two hilts for a sword. The messenger spoke good Portuguese, to whom I also gave a blue calico.
