1505 Description of its inhabitants
„In general, this race of people is black with frizzy hair, but of more understanding than the others who live toward the side of Mozambique, Quiloa, or Melinde, among whom one finds many man-eaters, who kill animals in order to drink their blood and sustain themselves with it. The subjects of Benomotapa worship only one God, called Mozimo by them; they have no idols nor statues to which they show any divine honor. And since the Negroes, their neighbors, are very inclined toward idolatry and witchcraft, nothing is punished more strictly among them than this act, not so much because of the religion as because they hold these things to be very harmful to the life and well-being of the people, such that those who are caught with this sickness must all undergo death.
