The ship Hector sunk. Tidings of other ships.
On the 6th, the Speedwel arrived here, sent by the General from Bantam, at the behest of Johan Clare, boatswain of the ship Hector, which had sunk there. This brought us the news of 5 ships having arrived from England: 4 to go to Suratte Surat, and one to Bantam; that the ship Thomas had departed for Japan; the Concordia Harmony to Socadania; and the Attendance to Jambe Jambi. They also recounted that the Spaniards from Macassar were heading to the Moluccas with 27 sail, including ships, galleys, and frigates, so that we believed they would not come to Bantam.
Loss of a Dutch ship.
On the 14th, a Javanese Jonck trading vessel came here with 5 Dutchmen, having lost their ship at 5 degrees South in the Æolus, and requested help from us. We granted them the Speedwel to go to the island of Enganio, where they had saved their goods and money, to which they sailed on the 24th.
The people here complained that they, when selling pepper to the King, lost a quarter because they took so much more than when they traded with the English.
The sequel is missing.
END.
