Smith goes on a journey.

Arrives in New England.

In the Year 1614, some merchants equipped 2 ships to undertake a voyage to New England, on one of which I was to make the journey. Everything being on board, we sailed with a favorable wind from England in the month of April, and arrived in a short time in New England, being a part of America, at the Island of Monachigam, at 44 degrees Northern latitude.

Our intention was to catch some whales there, to search for gold and copper ore, and in case we could not obtain such, then to take refuge in fishing and searching for furs to thus compensate for our losses; for we judged the whale a useful trade. We therefore prepared ourselves to fish, and indeed saw and chased many such whales; but misfortune would have it that we could not master any of them to kill them. It was a type of fish that one calls Jubartes humpback whales, and not the true whales that give baleen, fins, and oil, as we had hoped. As for the gold and ore, it would have been better had our Captain taken another course; for he had little capability,
