Location of Nieuw-Engeland New England.
situated in the Zuyd-Zee South Sea / Pacific Ocean, and was discovered by the famous sea-commander Francoys Draaks Francis Drake in his voyage that he made around the globe. He named it Nieuw-Engeland New England because it corresponds to it in its vastness. Nieuw-Vrankrijk New France is situated to the North of it; Virginia to the South, just like all the adjacent lands, with Nieuw-Granaden New Granada, Hispanien Hispaniola, Nieuw-Andalousien New Andalusia, and the West-Indiën West Indies. It is situated between 41 and 45 degrees North latitude; but that part of which I speak extends 75 miles from Pennobscot to Kaap Cod Cape Cod, between which borders I have found at least 40 different settlements situated by the sea, and also found 25 very good harbors. Furthermore, I have also discovered about 200 islands, overgrown with various kinds of timber: what a long time this would have required if I had examined everything accurately and according to its worth.
Pennobscot the principal settlement.
The principal settlement there, where we also have our colony, is Pennobscot, but southward along the seashore we found Mecadacut, Segocket, Pemaquid, Nuscoucus, Kenebeck, Sagadahock, and Amoughcowgen. To these regions belong
Peoples inhabiting these lands.
the peoples of Segotago, Paghhuntanuck, Pocopassum, Taughtanakagnet, Warbigganus, Nassaque, Masquerosqueck, Waweigweck, Moshoguen, Wakoogo, Pasharanack, etc. To this also belong the regions of Aucocisco, Accominticus, Passataquack, Aggawom, and Naemkeck.
Have almost the same language.
All these lands, as far as I could discern, have little difference in their languages, manner of life, and way of government, since most are their own lords, although they consider the Bishabes Chief/Sachem of Pennobscot as the greatest and most principal.
The nearest that I can bring to mind,
