Best time to fish.
In the months of March, April, May, and until the middle of June, the cod is here in great abundance. In May, June, July, and August, one catches mullet and sturgeon here, from which one makes caviar and putargo dried roe. One also finds herring here; these I have often taken out of the bellies of the cod, and I have also caught some with the net, for the Wilds fish with them in great numbers, which they catch in the sea under the beach. In the end of August, September, October, and November, it is again the time to make cod, salted fish, and Arme Jan dried/salted fish, literally "Poor John".
In what way the mullet is caught.
The mullet is here in great abundance. One catches them with nets; sometimes one gets them by the hundreds. Those caught at Cabo Blanco Cape Blanco with the hook are generally one and a half feet long, but here one catches them that can reach the size of two, three, or four feet, as I have sometimes measured them myself. Some of our people have caught several salmon in the river upstream. One has a great advantage here to keep the fish good at all times of the year because of the state of the air.
Salt.
What one could exchange.
Salt can also be made here in great abundance. One could bring cows, horses, and goats here, in exchange for which one could barter fish, and that in such a great number as to be able to fully load the ships, from which the expenses of ship and crew could easily be made good. However, one should take care to land here in the spring.
