A detailed historical map of ancient Belgium (Belgii Veteris) by Abraham Ortelius, dated 1594. The map displays the region of Gallia Belgica between the Rhine and the Seine rivers. It identifies numerous ancient tribes such as the Nervii, Batavi, Frisii, and Menapii. Topographical features include the Arduenna and Carbonaria forests and major rivers like the Rhenus (Rhine) and Mosa (Meuse). The map features four ornate cartouches with classical scrollwork, masks, and floral motifs. A compass rose is positioned in the sea area (labeled Oceanus Germanicus, etc.). The entire map is enclosed in a border with coordinate degrees.
I DO NOT KNOW BY WHAT SWEETNESS ONE'S NATIVE SOIL DRAWS ALL MEN, AND DOES NOT ALLOW THEM TO BE FORGETFUL OF ITSELF. A famous sentiment derived from Ovid, expressing homesickness or attachment to one's homeland.
