cause suppression, insofar as they extinguish and weaken the heat in the parts, or cause the blood to be at fault in the body in terms of quantity and quality.

XI.

Some signs are diagnostic, others are prognostic. Diagnostic signs, if they occur by reason of the whole body or of some principal viscus, will indicate the proper symptoms of the affected part; no pain around the uterus, and no symptoms [of that nature] will manifest themselves.

XII.

Diagnostic signs, which prove that the cause lies hidden in the uterus, either reveal to us the suppression of the menses itself, or lead to the knowledge and discernment of its causes.

XIII.

That the menses are not flowing can be known from conversations held back and forth with the patient. There is present an aversion to food, nausea, a heaviness of the entire body, especially of the loins and shoulder blades, pain in the loins, neck, and forepart of the head reaching to the roots of the eyes, a tensive lassitude, milk in the breasts, the evacuation of blood through other pathways unaccustomed to nature—the navel, breasts, mouth, eyes, ears—urine that is thick, turbid, and reddish, often black with a certain sanious humor, and finally other most grave symptoms and diseases.

XIV.

Obstruction is recognized from signs presenting both plethora and blood that is thick and viscous. Signs of plethora exhibit a color of the whole body, and especially of the face, that is rose-colored and florid, mixed from white and red: a fleshy habit with a vaporous heat: a pulse that is strong and large; copious sweats: the dispositions of the mind are pleasant and calm: the vessels are turgid: reddening flickers fly before the eyes.

XV.

Blood is judged to be thick and viscous when those things which were naturally apt to generate it have preceded it. If a woman, at the times in which she was accustomed to be purged, felt labors and pains in the loins and parts adjacent to the uterus, yet with this was only purged a little.
