John White's 'The Ancient History of the Maori' (1887) is the first comprehensive English translation of the specific Maori oral traditions, genealogies, and manuscripts collected by White under government commission. While some individual myths had been translated earlier by others (e.g., George Grey), White's work represents the first publication and translation of this specific, massive corpus of Maori text, and no other complete English translation of his collected Maori volumes has been published since.

This book preserves the oral traditions of the Maori before they were lost to history. It captures a world where gods and humans shared the same landscape and every natural event held a spiritual meaning.
